LPP Framework

Guided by our land-grant mission to transform lives and provide leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world, NC State University defines Leadership for Public Purpose (LPP) as a shared, values-based commitment to cultivating ethical, purposeful, and lifelong leaders who make a transformative impact on society and advance the greater good. Grounded in our “Think and Do” philosophy, NC State enables our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the communities and partners we serve to understand leadership not only as a process but also as a lifelong commitment to improve the places where we live and work.

NC State operationalizes LPP by providing impactful learning experiences that cultivate individuals’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions to intentionally engage, reflect, and practice leadership in the following domains:

  • Personal (Leading Self): Leadership begins with self-understanding. Rooted in our institutional values of Integrity and Excellence, we believe leadership involves clarifying one’s values, recognizing individual strengths, and aligning decisions and actions with the highest standards of ethical behavior.
  • Interpersonal (Leading Others): Leadership grows through relationships, mentoring, and engagement with others. This domain reflects NC State’s values of Community and Representation by focusing on how we connect, listen, and collaborate with one another. Whether in the classroom, on a team, or within a campus organization, leading others at NC State means practicing empathy, celebrating the diversity of thought and experience, and inspiring people toward a shared purpose.
  • Organizational (Leading Organizations): As leaders develop, they learn to see the bigger picture. This involves thinking across disciplines, asking hard questions, and finding innovative solutions. In this domain, leaders navigate complex organizational dynamics, build consensus across groups and teams, and align others in moving toward a common vision. This reflects NC State’s values of Collaboration and Excellence, as well as our strategic priority of interdisciplinary learning.
  • Societal (Leading Communities): Leadership is greater than oneself. This domain embodies the heart of our land-grant mission and our values of Sustainability and Freedom, emphasizing a commitment to civil and respectful discourse. It challenges individuals to act beyond self-interest in service of the public good, advancing social responsibility and community well-being. Leading communities means engaging with humility and respect, tackling real challenges, and turning ideas into action that benefits the public good.

Together, these domains describe leadership as a lifelong journey. Our LPP framework is reflected in NC State’s classrooms, labs, co-curricular initiatives, and partnerships across North Carolina and beyond. Each domain offers a lens for measuring growth and impact across the campus, the state, the region, and beyond, demonstrating a shared institutional commitment to our land grant mission of creating a transformative impact on society and advancing the greater good.
